Germination Information: I recommend these only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that need a chilling period to germinate. Sow the large, brown seeds about 1/2 inch deep in pots outdoors or in a nursery bed in fall to early winter. I have also had good luck getting them started by mixing them with a handful or two of moist vermiculite in a plastic bag, storing it in a refrigerator for about 3 months, and then setting it in a room-temperature spot out of direct sun. Check the bag every week or so, picking out individual seeds as they show signs of sprouting and planting them in deep pots. They quickly develop a taproot, though, so try not to keep them in the pots for more than a few weeks, if possible. Or, you could try planting the sprouted seeds directly in prepared spots where you want the trees to grow. They will need careful attention, though, and protection from animals.

Description

American hazelnut (Corylus americana), also known as American filbert, is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub that generally reaches 10 to 12 feet tall. It can spread by root suckers to form broad thickets. The deep green leaves often develop showy fall color (usually yellows and oranges). The male flowers are held in dangling catkins that are particularly noticeable after the leaves drop in fall. The female flowers are tiny red blossoms: barely noticeable in bloom but much more obvious when they develop into the ruffled husks, which contain the rounded, brown, edible seeds (nuts): food for people as well as wildlife. It is also a host plant for some butterflies and moths. American hazel is native to eastern North America. Full sun to partial shade; average soil. Zones 5 to 9.

I still have 2021-collected seeds left but am de-listing them, as they need a chilling period and it is getting late to do that outdoors. Smooth purple coneflower (Echinacea laevigata) is considered to be a federally endangered species. Several years ago, I received a gift of seeds from a mystery donor and have been enjoying it in my garden ever since. The plant-to-plant variation is really interesting—different color intensity and petal widths, for example—but all show the typical drooping petals and smooth leaves and stems. It has been flowering for a good 3 weeks already, while E. purpurea is just starting to flower. Easy from winter-sown seed. I’ve had it germinate in warm conditions too, without any chilling, but at a lower germination percentage. Lovely as a single plant in the garden and gorgeous in groups! Large-flowered collomia (Collomia grandiflora): perfectly peachy, with blue pollen as a perfect finishing touch. Another annual native to California that adapts easily to life elsewhere, including here in PA: Farnsworth’s jewel flower (Streptanthus farnsworthianus). The small flowers are cute by themselves, but against those purple bracts—just wow.
