Description
American hazelnut (Corylus americana), also known as American filbert, is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub that generally reaches 10 to 12 feet tall. It can spread by root suckers to form broad thickets. The deep green leaves often develop showy fall color (usually yellows and oranges). Some seedlings from my plants have also shown purplish markings on the leaves. The male flowers are held in dangling catkins that are particularly noticeable after the leaves drop in fall. The female flowers are tiny red blossoms: barely noticeable in bloom but much more obvious when they develop into the ruffled husks, which contain the rounded, brown, edible seeds (nuts)—food for people as well as wildlife. It is also a host plant for some butterflies and moths. American hazel is native to eastern North America. Full sun to partial shade; average soil. Zones 5 to 9.
2022-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in October 2023. At least 8 seeds. Ecotype unknown.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
