Here’s something for those of you who enjoy growing really uncommon edibles: a garbanzo bean (or chickpea) known as ‘Kabouli Black’, or ‘Black Kabouli’. The bushy, 24- to 30-inch-tall plants are very pretty, with arching leaves composed of dainty leaflets, and small, purple-pink, pea-type flowers. They turn into inflated pods, each holding one or two, dark brown to near-black seeds. This strain is what’s known as a “kabuli” or macrosperma type, which is common to Afghanistan, northern Africa, and Southern Europe in its lighter-seeded version. I grew this for the first time in 2021 and am saving most of my harvest for replanting, so I haven’t tried eating the protein-seeds myself, but apparently they can be used for fresh eating or dried for later use. Full sun. Annual.

2021-collected seeds sold out. I hope to collect again in August 2022. At least 12 seeds.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
