Description
If you’re hunting for native annuals for your garden or just want to grow something different (or hope to feed your local partridge population, I guess), partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata) is definitely worth a look. The bushy plants typically reach about 2 feet tall, with slender stems and compound leaves composed of tiny leaflets that fold down at night. Showy, bright yellow flowers bloom through the summer into early fall, followed by flat green-to-brown seedpods. The flowers attract a variety of bees and sulfur butterflies, and the seeds are apparently attractive to some game birds. The entire plant has a somewhat tropical look but is native to much of the central and eastern US. Once you get it started, it is likely to self-sow, but the seedlings are easy to spot and pull out if you don’t want them. Full sun. Annual.
Collected in early September 2023. At least 20 seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
