Caryopteris x clandonensis (Blue Mist Shrub) [15 Seeds]
Germination Information: If you are looking for a blue mist shrub with a specific flowering trait or growth habit, you’re better off purchasing a plant of a named cultivar. If you’re okay with a bit of color and size variation, though, growing from seed can produce good-looking plants too. I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, however, because they may require some patience.
The easiest approach is to purchase and surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in fall to early winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.
If you sow after January, consider setting the pot in a plastic bag in your refrigerator for two to three months before moving it to a warm, bright place for germination. (Remove the bag if the pot will be exposed to any direct sun.)
It is possible that these seeds could germinate if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 3 to 4 weeks, then try the refrigerator-chilling approach above before moving them back to warmth and light.

Blue mist shrub (Caryopteris x clandonensis) produces bushy plants typically 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, with aromatic, gray-green leaves and whorls of blue flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall. Commonly grown as a perennial but technically a deciduous shrub, it is a favorite with bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The seedheads are somewhat interesting too, and if you leave them on the plant into the winter, you’re likely to find some self-sown seedlings in future years. I suggest cutting all of the stems back to about 1 foot soon after you notice new growth appearing in spring to keep established plants neat and bushy. Full sun. Zones 5 to 9.
Harvested in October 2020. At least 15 seeds.
