Cardiospermum halicacabum (Love in a Puff) [12 Seeds]

Cannot ship to Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, or Texas. Please do not order these seeds if you live in any of these states.

Germination Information: You could start these seeds in pots indoors (1/4 to 1/2 inch deep) in mid- to late spring, then set the seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. The vines grow so quickly, however, that I usually sow the seeds outdoors in late spring, right at the base of whatever I want them to grow on. Though the vine is annual, it’s not unusual to find it coming up in the same area the following year (from self-sown seedlings), particularly in warm climates.

Love in a puff (Cardiospermum halicacabum), also known as balloon vine, is a charming, easy-to-grow climber with lacy, bright green leaves and an abundance of tiny white flowers that develop into green, balloon-like seedpods. Within each seedpod are round black seeds, each marked with a white heart. The slender stems cling with dainty tendrils, so they’re best on some kind of mesh or wire support. They’ll readily climb to 10 feet or more, if they can; on a shorter support, the shoot tips will eventually cascade back toward the ground. If you want some splashes of color amid all of the green, consider planting a morning glory on the same support.

Collected in August to October 2023. At least 12 seeds. Shipping to US addresses (except in AL, AR, GA, SC, or TX) only.

Good germination, vigorous but wispy vines that climb nicely through a support without overwhelming it. The little green puffs are very cute, flowers are tiny but surprisingly attractive to pollinators.
