Bouteloua curtipendula (Sideoats Grama) [25 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I suggest starting these seeds in pots, gently pressed into the surface of the growing medium, in a warm, bright place indoors in spring or outdoors in summer. Sow them into cell packs, or sow them all in one pot and transplant them (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 10 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Description

Sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a clump-forming, warm-season grass that reaches 2 to 3 feet tall in bloom. The interesting, oat-like flower clusters have showy orange stamens, providing a splash of color you don’t expect from a grass. I originally grew this US native in my meadow, where it really caught my eye, and I raised more from seed so I could have some for my garden too. I particularly like it paired with butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) or sulphur cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus) for a perfect color echo in bloom. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.

Collected in August 2022. At least 25 seeds. Unknown ecotype.
