Description
Sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a clump-forming, warm-season grass that reaches 2 to 3 feet tall in bloom. The interesting, oat-like flower clusters have showy orange stamens, providing a splash of color you don’t expect from a grass. I originally grew this US native in my meadow, where it really caught my eye, and I raised more from seed so I could have some for my garden too. I particularly like it paired with butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) or sulphur cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus) for a perfect color echo in bloom. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.
Collected in August 2022. At least 25 seeds. Unknown ecotype.
