Betonica officinalis ‘Alba’ (White-Flowered Betony) [15 Seeds]

(1 customer review)

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who are experienced with seeds that require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in a pot in fall to late winter, setting it outdoors in a spot protected from mice so the seeds can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. Germination may be slow and irregular.

If you sow after February, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month. If no seedlings appear in summer, leave the pot outdoors through the next winter, spring, and early summer before giving up.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Betony (Betonica officinalis, formerly Stachys officinalis) produces dense basal clumps of scalloped, deep green leaves. On ‘Alba’, clusters of bright white flowers appear at the top of upright, 18- to 24-inch-tall stems  in early to midsummer. (Please note that there is a possibility that these seeds may produce some plants with the pink flowers typical of the species.) If you aren’t planning to collect seed, I suggest shearing the whole plant to about 1 inch above the ground once the flowers are finished; the plants will then produce a tidy mound of fresh leaves that look good through the rest of the growing season. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 4 to 8.

Collected in late August and early September 2022. At least 15 seeds.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
