Baptisia australis (Blue False Indigo) [20 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because they require some patience. It may take several months to see germination, and the plants may take several years to produce their first flowers. They tend to be worth the wait, however, and can live for many years without any special care.

There are a number of different ways you can approach germinating these seeds.

One route I have had good luck with in late winter to midsummer is nicking the seeds with nail clippers, pouring hot (not boiling) water over them, letting them soak for a day or two, and then sowing in very warm conditions.

Another approach is to sow the seeds (about 1/4″ deep) in fall to mid winter. Set them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can germinate when conditions are right in spring.

Some references suggest inoculating baptisia seeds before sowing to enhance germination. I have not found that to be necessary, but I encourage you to do further research to learn about inoculation, and about other germination techniques, if you’re interested.

Description

Blue false indigo (Baptisia australis), also known as blue wild indigo, produces large, spiky clusters of blue flowers in late spring to early summer. The bushy plants eventually reach 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. (If they start getting too big for their spot, you can shear them back by 1/3 to 1/2 as soon as the flowers fade to get more compact, bushier regrowth. This also prevents self-sowing.)

Beautiful in bloom and handsome in leaf, blue false indigo is a classic border perennial, but it’s equally at home in a meadow garden or naturalistic planting. It has tremendous value for pollinators, providing nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies, and pollen as well for bumblebees. It also serves as a host plant for several butterfly species. Please be aware that I grow several species and natural hybrids of baptisias here, and though I collect these seeds from a group of B. australis growing off by itself, there’s a possibility that some off-type seedlings may appear. US native. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9.

Harvested in August 2022. At least 20 seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
