Asarum canadense (Canada Wild Ginger) [20 Seeds]

$4.75

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because germination can be very slow and irregular, and they require patience. Traditional advice calls for sowing them outdoors, about 1/8″ deep, as soon as you receive them, in a pot or in a holding bed. They should germinate next spring but may take an additional year.

That being said, I have some more data to add: In 2021, I mixed the freshly collected (June 10) seeds with moist vermiculite in a resealable plastic bag and stored it in the dark at room temperature (mid 70s for the rest of the summer, then gradually cooling to the mid 60s through fall). In early December, I happened to check the bag and found that all of the seeds had begun to sprout! So, that’s obviously another option for a germination protocol. I then sowed them in pots and kept them in my cold basement until late March, then set them outside; the leaves came up within 2 weeks and made nice, sturdy seedlings that were easy to transplant.

Description

Canada wild ginger (Asarum canadense) is an eastern American native perennial with broad, roughly heart-shaped, deciduous leaves all through the growing season and curiously shaped, deep purple-brown spring blooms that are hidden by the foliage. It spreads by rhizomes, as well as by self-sowing, to form a handsome, deer-resistant groundcover for partial to full shade. Height is usually around 6 to 8 inches. Reportedly hardy in Zones 3 or 4 to 7.

2023-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in June 2024. These seeds have been mixed with a bit of moistened vermiculite and stored at room temperature since harvest. Each packet will contain at least 20 seeds (as well as some of the vermiculite). Ecotype unknown. Shipping to US addresses only.
