Aquilegia vulgaris ex blue and gold (Columbine) [20 Seeds]

$3.95

Germination Information: I suggest starting these seeds in pots—surface-sow (do not cover them)—in late fall to late winter. Set them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after February, consider giving the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month.

It is possible that at least some of these seeds could germinate if you sow them indoors under lights in spring, or outdoors in summer. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within a month or so, then try the artificial chilling period before moving them back to a bright place.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

With most columbines (Aquilegia), the flowers are the key feature, and this one does have attractive, single blooms in a rich purplish blue hue. The plants I collected these seeds from have a marvelous bonus feature: bright yellow foliage that perfectly complements the flowers. The leaf color is strongest in spring, with some colorful new leaves possibly appearing later in the season, particularly as the weather cools. I do have other columbines growing elsewhere here at Hayefield, so there’s a possibility that these seeds may produce some off-type plants. I don’t think any others were blooming at the same time these were, though, so there’s a good chance they will be true. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9.

Collected in late June 2021. At least 20 seeds.
