Description
This wildflower has several common names, including candle anemone, thimbleweed, and long-headed windflower, all of which refer to the elongated seedhead that follows each white to greenish white, early- to midsummer flowers. The flowers bloom atop stems that reach about 2 feet tall, with deeply lobed, rich green foliage. The interesting seedheads are green through the summer, eventually turning brown and then fluffy as the mature seeds are released in fall: a fun accent in the autumn garden. The leaves may also develop some reddish fall color. Anemone cylindrica is native to many parts of North America. It can spread by rhizomes and also self-sow. Full sun to partial shade; average to dry soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.
Full disclosure: I am 95 percent sure that these seeds are A. cylindrica and not A. virginiana. I received my original seeds as A. cylindrica, and the resulting plants seem to match the descriptions of that species. The two species are very similar, though, and every once in a while, I see a trait that makes me wonder if my plants are correctly identified (specifically, the seedheads don’t seem to be as elongated as those on some photos of A. cylindrica). If it’s vital that you have the 100-percent true A. cylindrica for some reason, then you may want to pass on these; otherwise, expect the plants to match the description above.
