Description
This wildflower has several common names, including candle anemone, thimbleweed, and long-headed windflower, all of which refer to the elongated seedhead that follows each white to greenish white, early- to midsummer flowers. The flowers bloom atop stems that reach about 2 feet tall, with deeply lobed, rich green foliage. The interesting seedheads are green through the summer, eventually turning brown and then fluffy as the mature seeds are released in fall: a fun accent in the autumn garden. The leaves may also develop some reddish fall color. Anemone cylindrica is native to many parts of North America. Full sun to partial shade; average to dry soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.
