Andropogon gerardii (Big Bluestem) [30 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I suggest starting these seeds indoors, on the surface of or just barely covered with the growing medium, in a warm, bright place. Sow them into cell packs, or sow them all in one pot and transplant them (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 10 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a warm-season, clump-forming grass with slender, reddish panicles in late summer and coppery fall foliage color. Reaching anywhere from 5 to 7 feet, it’s right at home in a meadow garden or a naturalistic border paired with tall, late-flowering perennials, such as crownbeards (Verbesina), ironweeds (Vernonia), New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), and perennial sunflowers (Helianthus). The species is a US native; these seeds are from wild plants in my meadow in Bucks County, PA. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.

Collected in early October 2023. At least 30 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
