Albuca shawii (Shaw’s Albuca) [15 Seeds]

$4.50

Germination Information: These seeds seem to germinate well in cool conditions, so the easiest route is to sow them about 1/4″ deep in a pot and set them outside any time between late fall and early spring. (The last time I started this species from seed, I sowed on January 10 and set the pot outdoors; seedlings started to appear in late May. Your experience may vary.) The winter-sowing approach can work well with these seeds. I have read that they can also germinate at room temperature but I have not tried that myself.

Description

Growing most bulbs from seed is an exercise in patience, as it can take several years for them to reach flowering size. Not so with Shaw’s albuca (Albuca shawii)! Some sources say that with a very early start, it’s possible to see a few flowers even the first year. More likely in the second year, and each year thereafter, you’ll enjoy a display of nodding, green-striped yellow blooms along 12- to 18-inch-tall stems above slender, bright green leaves through much of the summer. I have read that the flowers are fragrant and the foliage is aromatic too. I have to admit that I don’t detect much from the flowers but the leaves do have a pleasing scent. This South African bulb needs excellent drainage and grows beautifully in a pot, which makes it easy to bring indoors for a dry winter-dormancy period where it isn’t hardy. Full sun. Tender bulb; Zones 7 to 10, reportedly.

Harvested in July and August 2023. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
